About Rafiee Ghani
Rafiee Abdul Ghani was born in 1962. His early passion for travel and distant places was shaped by his father, a geologist who would send postcards home from the far-flung locations he worked in — an early exposure to the wider world that left a lasting mark on his artistic imagination.
He began his formal training at De Vrije Academie voor Beeldende Kunst in The Hague (1980), before completing a Diploma in Printmaking at MARA Institute of Technology in 1985 and a Master of Arts in Fine Prints at Manchester Polytechnic, England, in 1987. Drawing early influence from European masters such as Gauguin and Matisse, he developed an abstract expressionist sensibility grounded in bold colour and gestural mark-making. He taught at ITM and later spent time in the Seychelles between 1991 and 1993.
Rafiee first visited Morocco in 1986 and has returned almost every year since, spending extended periods in the Moroccan-Algerian-Tunisian region. In 2025, he held the solo exhibition Rafiee Ghani in Morocco at G13 Gallery, Petaling Jaya — his first full collection of watercolour works, marking a deliberate shift in medium after a career primarily in oils and acrylics. His Morocco Series, alongside Overland and Bumi Bertuah, has established him as one of the most travelled and internationally referenced voices in Malaysian contemporary painting.
