About Tang Hong Lee

Born in Kuala Rompin, Pahang in 1963, Tang Hong Lee studied at the Kuala Lumpur College of Art before completing a Bachelor of Arts in Printmaking at the Canberra Institute of Arts, Australia, in 1990. He subsequently taught at the Kuala Lumpur College of Arts for two decades before returning to painting full-time.

Over a career of more than thirty years, nature has been Tang's central subject. In the late 1990s, his work took on a more political dimension — using anchovies as a recurring motif to address themes of social inequality. From around 2010, his palette shifted dramatically toward vibrant, polychromatic colour, with landscapes rendered in dense, prismatic hues that carry a sense of playful energy and quiet joy.

He received an Honourable Mention at the 1999 Philip Morris ASEAN Art Awards (Malaysian sector) and the Incentive Award at the Galeri Shah Alam Open exhibition in 2000. His solo exhibitions include Rhythm of Colours at Momentous Gallery Singapore, Dreamland (2013), and Spectacles of Nature at Momentous Arts Singapore (2016). His most recent series, Enigmatic Landscapes, continues his exploration of the spiritual and mystical dimensions of the natural world.
