About Ismail Mat Hussin

Born in 1938 in Pantai Sabak, Kelantan, Ismail Mat Hussin (1938–2015) was a legendary figure in Malaysian batik art, celebrated for his lyrical depictions of East Coast village life. A protégé of the great Khalil Ibrahim, Ismail's work is defined by its warm, earthy palette and meticulous "cracking" technique. Beyond his canvas, he was a accomplished violinist with a Grade V certificate from the Royal School of Music London—a musicality that translated into the rhythmic, harmonious flow of his paintings. His art serves as a visual archive of a disappearing world, capturing the quiet dignity of fishermen, market traders, and weavers in the heart of Kelantan.

As a blue-chip Malaysian artist, Ismail Mat Hussin's works are a staple of the international auction circuit, with major pieces frequently appearing at Henry Butcher and Sotheby's. His most iconic collections—including the Wayang Kulit series, Market Scene, and his beloved Kite Flying (Wau) series—are highly sought after for their cultural authenticity and technical complexity. Recognized with the Tokoh Seniman Negara award in 2006, his masterpieces are held in the permanent collections of the National Art Gallery Malaysia, Bank Negara, and Petronas. For collectors seeking an investment in the heritage of Malaysian fine art, an Ismail Mat Hussin original offers a timeless blend of traditional craft and sophisticated fine-art composition.
