Hoe Say Yong

Hoe Say Yong (b. 1956) is one of Malaysia's foremost watercolourists, celebrated for paintings that capture the movement and luminosity of water. He studied at the KL College of Art (1975–1977) and held his first solo exhibition in Johor in 1982. Working initially with still lifes of fish on newspaper, he developed his signature Reflection series in 1986 — compositions in which rippling water surfaces dissolve and multiply the reflected world. The series debuted to wide recognition at Alpha Utara Gallery in Penang in 2009, followed by shows at Artfolio in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. In 2011 he received the Asia Art award from the Korea Culture Art Research Institute, and his work 24 Solar Terms was exhibited at Seoul Metro Art Centre, South Korea. He participates regularly in the Langkawi International Arts Festival and international watercolour exchanges across Asia.
